The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) officials were yesterday regaling the defeat of their opposition in the Kalenga By-Election, announcing that the victory had given them the impetus for the Chalinze contest next month.
CCM publicity and ideology secretary Mr Nape Nnauye told The Citizen yesterday that his party’s landslide victory shows the truth that CCM is still the people’s choice.
“Our opponents Chadema tried their best but Kalenga residents have showed trust in the ruling party. It was a good return for us considering our rivals deployed some 40 MPs and a helicopter to conduct their campaign,” Mr Nnauye said.
Mr Nape said the party now has strength to take up any of the parties that will come to contest in the forthcoming Chalinze by-election in which CCM has endorsed President Jakaya Kikwete’s son, Ridhiwani, as its candidate. Mr Godfrey Mugimwa’s win means he succeeds his late father William Mgimwa who died in January while serving as finance minister.
Mr Mgimwa’s victory atoned for the CCM loss in 2012 when the party’s candidate for the Arumeru East by-election, Sioi Sumari, lost to Chadema’s Joshua Nassari. Sioi Sumari had aimed at also succeeding his father Jeremiah Sumari who died in office as Deputy Minister for finance.
Chadema officials could not be reached yesterday to comment on the performance in the Kalenga race as reports said officials in the party would table a report after an analysis.
Yesterday Mr.Mgimwa who is in his early 30s, received 79 per cent of the vote to floor the Chadema opponent Grace Tendega and help CCM retain the seat. Mr Richard Minja from Chausta came a distant third.
Ms Tendega accepted the defeat but promised to put more efforts to ensure residents of Kalenga are liberated.
The by-election supervisor, Ms Pudenciana Kisaka, who publicly announced the results said CCM candidate hauled 22,962 votes, which was 79.32 per cent of all votes against 5,853 votes, or 20.22 per cent of all votes garnered by his closest challenger , Ms Tendega.
Chausta’s candidate scrapped only 150 votes, which was 0.52 per cent of the all cast votes.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate you personally and your party CCM, and all other political parties which agreed to participate in this election, since without them we wouldn’t be here today,” said the by-election supervisor.
According to the supervisor, only 29,541 people voted in the by-election out of 71,965 people who were registered in the voters’ book in 2010.
In that election 576 votes were nullified, thus reducing the number of eligible votes to 28,965.
The winner thanked people of Kalenga for choosing him their representative while also thanking leaders of CCM for playing a vital role in his victory.
“I thank you CCM leaders at national, regional and district levels for their confidence in me, and I also thank voters for voting for me.. now, I commit myself to serving you, my nation and fulfill all promises I gave you during the campaign,” said Mr Mgimwa.
To fulfill his promises, Mgimwa named his priorities in his new role as education, clean water, agriculture and health services
